Program in Mathematics for young scientists

PROMYS Italia is a six-week summer program at the University of Padova, Italy, designed to help motivated and talented high-school students to explore in depth the world of mathematics in a supportive community of colleagues, counselors and research mathematicians.

The students will be carefully selected from Italy, Europe and around the world. The courses will be taught in English but otherwise the program will be conducted in English and Italian.

The first PROMYS Italia program happened in the summer 2025, we are happy to announce that we will have 6-7 position for returning PROMYS Italia students during the 2026 program. The returning students will follow the Number Theory course and will work on the Number Theory problem sets, along with the first year students, and moreover there will be two new, more advanced courses for them to attend.

PROMYS Italia 2026: July 12 -August 22, 2026 at Padova, Italy.

Applications available: January 5, 2026.

Program

Our program is a partner of the other three PROMYS programs: PROMYS at Boston University, PROMYS Europe at Oxford University and PROMYS India, in the sense that we follow the basic PROMYS guiding principles:

1) Exploration and Discovery

PROMYS participants are presented with fundamental mathematical problems which require perseverance and creativity to find solutions. We provide tools for mathematical exploration, not solutions. At PROMYS, learners are mathematicians.

2) Habits of Mind

We focus on mathematical habits of mind that support independence and creativity in facing unfamiliar mathematical challenges. The skills and habits developed at PROMYS have great value no matter ones career path.

3) Mathematical Community

At PROMYS, we believe that mathematics is a deeply human activity best experienced within a richly interactive and mutually supportive community of learners, including high school students, undergraduates and graduate students, secondary teachers, and research mathematicians.

4) No Financial Barriers to Participation

Generous need-based financial aid is available to students at PROMYS up to the full cost of participation.
